Kroger will permanently close its grocery store at Carman Plaza in Flint Township, Michigan, on September 30, 2026, marking another shutdown in the supermarket chain’s ongoing effort to restructure its operations.

The closure affects the Kroger location at G3288 Corunna Road, near Interstate 75, but shoppers in the area will still have access to other Kroger stores nearby. The company said employees affected by the shutdown will have opportunities to transfer to other locations.

Kroger Calls Closure A Company-Wide Decision

According to The U.S. Sun, Kroger said the Flint Township shutdown reflects a broader strategy focused on improving efficiency across its business.

In a statement about the closure, the company said: “We have made the difficult decision to close our Kroger store located at G3288 Corunna Road in Flint Township, effective September 30, 2026.”

The company also addressed the impact on employees, saying: “While we are leaving this location, we will offer each impacted associate the opportunity to transfer to a new location.”

Kroger said the decision was connected to a wider operational review rather than a complete withdrawal from the local market. The company added: “This closure is part of a larger company-wide decision to run more efficiently and ensure the long-term health of our business.”

Flint Township Shoppers Will Still Have Nearby Kroger Options

The closure will not eliminate Kroger’s presence in the Flint Township area. A second store at the intersection of Corunna Road and Dye Road will remain open for customers.

Kroger will also continue operating nine stores throughout Genesee County after the Carman Plaza location closes. The company’s remaining Michigan locations will continue serving communities across the state.

For local shoppers, the change means adjusting to a different nearby store rather than losing access to the chain entirely. The Carman Plaza location will serve customers until the end of September before permanently shutting down.

Kroger’s Wider Store Closure Plan Targets Underperforming Locations

The Flint Township closure comes as Kroger moves forward with a larger plan announced in 2025 to reduce the number of stores it operates.

In June 2025, Kroger announced plans to close around 60 stores over an 18-month period. At the time, the company said the closures represented about 5% of its store network and would focus mainly on locations that were not meeting performance expectations.

The strategy was introduced as Kroger looked to strengthen its operations and improve financial performance. The company began reviewing its store portfolio while facing major changes in the grocery industry, including rising competition and shifting consumer habits.

The store reduction plan also followed the collapse of Kroger’s proposed merger with Albertsons. The planned deal, which would have combined two major U.S. supermarket chains, was blocked after regulatory opposition.

Kroger Continues Operating Across The United States

Despite the planned closures, Kroger remains one of the largest grocery retailers in the United States. The company continues operating stores across 16 states, including numerous locations throughout Michigan.

Kroger has not publicly released a complete list of every store affected by the broader closure program. Individual shutdown announcements have continued as the company reviews locations and adjusts its retail strategy.
