Aldi will close six stores in the United States during 2026 while continuing with a major expansion program worth $9 billion. The discount supermarket says the closures are intended to help it allocate resources more effectively as it opens hundreds of new locations across the country.
The decision affects stores in Minnesota, Illinois, Texas, Wisconsin and New York. It comes during what the retailer describes as its most aggressive period of US expansion to date, with more than 225 new stores due to open during 2026 and a wider plan to reach 3,200 locations by 2028.
According to the report, Aldi has said that closing selected stores allows it to “better allocate resources while maintaining a high-quality shopping experience” at nearby locations. Employees affected by individual closures are also offered transfers to neighbouring stores where possible.
The approach means Aldi is reducing its presence in a small number of areas while continuing to increase its overall store network. The company currently operates more than 2,500 supermarkets across 41 US states, with particularly large numbers of stores in Florida, Illinois and Ohio, as well as a presence in Washington, D.C.
Six Aldi Stores Are Scheduled to Close in 2026
The six locations identified for closure are spread across five states. In Minnesota, the affected store is at 1451 Riverwood Drive in Burnsville. Illinois will lose the Aldi at 1202 W Dundee Road in Buffalo Grove, while the Texas closure concerns the store at 9779 Forest Lane #200c in Dallas.
Two closures are planned in Wisconsin. They are the store at 5301 N Hopkins Street in Milwaukee and the branch at 1712 S 108th Street in West Allis. In New York, Aldi will close its location at 3512 Brewerton Road in North Syracuse.
According to Aldi’s explanation cited in the Daily Express, these closures form part of a broader effort to manage resources while continuing to keep prices low. The company has also indicated that employees at affected branches may be transferred to nearby stores, reducing the impact of the changes on existing staff.
The closures sit alongside other adjustments to Aldi’s operations, including new store openings and changes to opening hours. The retailer has been pursuing expansion both in the United States and in the United Kingdom.
Expansion Continues with More than 225 US Openings
Aldi plans to open more than 225 stores across the United States in 2026, the largest number it has opened in the country within a single year. The program forms part of a five-year, $9 billion (£6.6 billion) growth strategy. The retailer is also entering new markets. Phoenix, Arizona, is among the areas identified for expansion, with 10 new Aldi stores expected to open there by the end of 2026.
According to the report, Aldi expects to have almost 2,800 US locations by the end of this year, before reaching a planned total of 3,200 stores by 2028. By store count, Aldi is already described as one of the largest grocery chains in the United States, although it remains behind Walmart when measured by revenue.
The company has also extended its reach through delivery partnerships with services including Uber Eats, allowing customers to order groceries without visiting a store. Against that wider expansion, the six closures represent a targeted reduction in selected locations rather than a halt to Aldi’s broader growth program.
