A popular potato chip recall has been upgraded by US health regulators to the highest risk classification, raising concern ahead of the Independence Day holiday as contaminated seasoning ingredients linked to salmonella exposure prompt warnings for consumers across the country.
Recall Upgraded To Class I Risk Level
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified the recall of select Utz Quality Foods potato chips as a Class I recall, its most serious designation. This classification is issued when there is a reasonable probability that exposure to a product could lead to serious health consequences or death.
The decision follows a voluntary recall initiated by the company in May involving specific Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chip products.

Products Affected By The Recall
The recall includes several flavours of chips distributed nationwide. Affected products include Zapp’s Bayou Blackened Ranch, Salt and Vinegar, and Big Cheezy, as well as Dirty brand Salt and Vinegar, Maui Onion, and Sour Cream and Onion varieties.
The products were sold across retailers in the United States with “best by” dates ranging from August 2026 through the end of that month. No other Utz products are included in the recall.

Contamination Source Linked To Ingredient Supply Chain
The recall was triggered after a seasoning ingredient used in production was found to potentially contain salmonella contamination. The ingredient included dry milk powder sourced through a third-party supplier, which was also involved in a separate recall affecting other food products.
The company stated that initial testing did not detect contamination before production, and the issue was identified later through supplier notifications.
No Reported Illnesses So Far
Utz has stated that no illnesses have been reported in connection with the affected products. The company initiated the recall as a precautionary measure and has been cooperating with the FDA throughout the process.
Officials have emphasised that the action was taken to protect consumer safety while investigations continue.
Health Risks Of Salmonella Infection
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that salmonella infection can cause symptoms including fever, diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal pain. While most healthy individuals recover without treatment, the infection can be more serious for young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.
In rare cases, it can spread to the bloodstream and lead to severe complications requiring medical attention.
Consumer Advice Ahead Of Holiday Period
Consumers are being advised not to eat any products included in the recall and to dispose of them immediately. The timing of the warning comes as many households in the US prepare for Fourth of July gatherings and increased food consumption.
Health authorities continue to monitor the situation as part of ongoing food safety oversight.

That’s a surprising recall. Which companies were affected? Seems like a lot of people will be missing their snacks for a while.
