Another round of $1,000 monthly payments is being sent to selected Americans this month as part of an ongoing guaranteed income program designed to help families cover everyday living costs. The payments are continuing automatically for households enrolled in the pilot scheme.
Families Continue Receiving Monthly $1,000 Payments
The guaranteed basic income program launched in Howard County, Maryland, in partnership with the Community Action Council of Howard County.
Under the initiative, 20 families across areas including Ellicott City, Columbia, Elkridge, Laurel and Savage were selected to receive $1,000 per month for one year. The payments began in August 2025 and are continuing through August 2026.
Another round of payments is expected to arrive automatically in recipients’ bank accounts during May. By the end of the program, participating households will have received around $12,000 in total financial support.
Program Designed to Improve Financial Stability
Officials said the program was created to help families struggling with rising living costs and financial instability. Alongside the monthly payments, participating households also receive additional support services and educational programs aimed at improving long-term financial security.
Howard County Executive Calvin Ball said guaranteed income programs introduced in cities across the US have shown positive effects on both financial stability and family wellbeing. Officials hope the Maryland pilot will help families remain securely housed, improve budgeting skills and increase household income over time.
Strict Eligibility Rules Were Applied
Families selected for the program had to meet several eligibility requirements. Applicants needed to: live in Howard County, have at least one child under 18, already receive support from specific Community Action Council programs.
Participants also needed household incomes between 150% and 300% of the federal poverty limit and could not already receive certain housing subsidies. Officials said the pilot program will also help collect data to determine whether similar guaranteed income programs could continue in the future.
Guaranteed Income Programs Continue Expanding
Guaranteed basic income programs have expanded across several US cities and states in recent years as local governments test new ways to support struggling households. Supporters argue the payments help families cover rent, food, childcare and other rising expenses without restrictions on how the money is spent.
Other cities across the US are also continuing similar programs involving monthly or one-time payments to eligible residents.
More Payments Still Scheduled This Summer
The Howard County pilot is expected to continue making monthly payments through the summer, with recipients continuing to receive automatic deposits until August 2026.
Officials said they will review the results of the program after it ends later this year.
