Trader Joe’s customers could still qualify for a cash payment from a $7.4 million settlement, but the deadline to file a claim is approaching quickly. Eligible shoppers may receive around $102 each if they qualify under the agreement linked to claims involving customer receipts.
Trader Joe’s Agreed to Multi-Million Dollar Settlement
The lawsuit was filed after a customer alleged that certain Trader Joe’s receipts displayed too many digits from credit card numbers. According to court documents, some receipts reportedly showed the first six and last four digits of customer cards.
The lawsuit claimed this increased the potential risk of identity theft and violated federal consumer protection laws covering payment card information. Trader Joe’s denied any wrongdoing and said it was not aware of any fraud or identity theft connected to the issue.
Despite rejecting the claims, the grocery chain agreed to settle the lawsuit earlier this year to avoid further legal proceedings and costs. The settlement still requires final approval from a judge, with a hearing expected to take place later this year.
Only Certain Trader Joe’s Customers Qualify
Not all Trader Joe’s shoppers are eligible to receive money from the settlement. According to the official settlement website, customers must have made purchases at affected Trader Joe’s stores between March 5, 2019, and July 19, 2019.
The website also noted that only a limited number of stores printed receipts containing the extra card digits and that only a small percentage of transactions were affected. Eligible customers are expected to receive either an email notice or postcard containing a claim identification number needed to complete the process.
Individual Payments Could Reach Around $102
The exact payout each customer receives will depend on the total number of valid claims submitted before the deadline. Current estimates suggest payments may reach approximately $102 per person, although the amount could change depending on participation levels and legal costs linked to the settlement.
Customers who believe they qualify must submit their claim forms before June 9, 2026. After the deadline passes, the court will review the settlement during a final approval hearing currently scheduled for later this year. If approved, payments will then be distributed to eligible claimants.
Trader Joe’s Continues Expanding Across the US
The settlement comes during a period of continued expansion for Trader Joe’s. The grocery chain opened around 41 new stores during 2025 and has already confirmed additional locations planned for 2026.
Company officials recently said Trader Joe’s is actively searching for hundreds of new neighbourhoods where future stores could open.
Time Running Out for Eligible Customers
With only weeks remaining before the filing deadline, eligible customers are being encouraged to check emails, letters and purchase records carefully to avoid missing out on potential compensation.
Once the June deadline passes, customers who fail to submit claims may lose the chance to receive money from the settlement entirely.
