A wide-reaching recall of fruit products has been initiated across 27 states due to the risk of lead contamination. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning that includes a range of products, particularly affecting young children and vulnerable populations.
The voluntary recall, which was first launched by Pacific Coast Producers on 4 September 2025, involves four different fruit products, including fruit cocktail and halved pears. The products were distributed through major retailers, including Walmart and Wegmans, sparking concern over potential health risks, especially regarding the harmful effects of lead exposure.
The Health Risks of Lead Contamination
Lead exposure, even at low levels, can be dangerous, particularly for children, who are more susceptible to its toxic effects. According to the FDA, lead is known to cause developmental delays and neurological damage in young children, with the most severe risks occurring during periods of rapid brain development. The FDA has classified the recall as a Class II risk, meaning there is a potential for adverse health effects, though the risk of serious long-term harm is considered low.
Lead poisoning can also have lasting effects on adults, causing kidney damage, hypertension, and cognitive decline. As stated by the FDA, the risk to consumers depends on several factors, including the amount and frequency of lead exposure, and the age and overall health of the individual.
