In July 2025, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will provide substantial food assistance to qualifying families across the United States. With payments of up to $3,516 for larger households in states like Alaska, this month’s disbursement aims to support those in need of financial aid for food. The funds are provided through Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards, which can be used at authorized retailers to purchase necessary food items.

This annual disbursement comes as a critical lifeline for millions of Americans who face food insecurity. As the payments are distributed across multiple states, it’s important for recipients to understand when they can expect their benefits, and how best to manage and protect their EBT cards.

SNAP payments begin July 1 in several states

The first wave of SNAP benefits for July 2025 will start on July 1, with Alaska, Florida, Texas, and other states leading the disbursement. These payments are part of the USDA’s scheduled disbursements that will help eligible households access vital food resources.

In states like Alaska, large families can receive up to $3,516, while the average payment across the 48 contiguous states can reach as much as $1,756. These figures are based on family size and income, and they reflect the USDA’s ongoing effort to help low-income individuals and families meet their nutritional needs. The benefits are issued through the EBT system, which functions like a debit card, allowing users to purchase eligible food items at authorized locations, including grocery stores, markets, and certain retailers.

Payment schedules across the U.S.

While July 1 marks the start of disbursements, each state has a unique schedule for issuing SNAP benefits throughout the month. Some states will only distribute benefits on a single date, while others may have a window of several days for payments.

For instance, states like California, Arizona, and Colorado will issue SNAP payments between July 1 and 10, with specific dates set by each state. On the other hand, Florida will provide payments over a longer period, from July 1 to July 28. South Dakota, the final state to begin its disbursements, will start on July 10, marking the end of the USDA’s payment schedule for the month.

In total, 36 states are slated to begin issuing payments on or after July 1, 2025, and these payments will continue throughout the month to provide food assistance to families across the country.

The importance of safeguarding your EBT card

For recipients of SNAP benefits, it is essential to take precautions to protect their EBT cards. Once issued, the benefits are loaded onto the card and can be used for qualifying food purchases. However, if the card is lost or stolen, the USDA does not offer replacements for the lost benefits, which can be devastating for individuals who rely on these funds for daily sustenance.

To prevent theft or misuse, recipients are advised to keep their PIN numbers secure, change them regularly, and avoid sharing them with others. Additionally, they should regularly inspect card readers at point-of-sale terminals to ensure there is no hidden hardware or overlay that could compromise their card’s security.

While the bulk of the SNAP payments will be distributed starting July 1, some states will not begin until later in the month. For example, Alabama, Georgia, and Puerto Rico will issue payments starting around July 4, and continue through July 23. States like South Dakota and Maine will be among the last to start their payments, with South Dakota beginning on July 10.
