Glasgow is about to make history and become the first ever city in the UK to have a legally recognized safer drugs consumption facility. This will be a milestone towards tackling the drug crisis which is increasingly growing in the country.

October 21 marks the day of launching Safer Drugs Consumption Facility on Hunter Street, east end area of the city to offer secure areas for drug use like heroin or cocaine. This ground-breaking hub seeks to address Scotland’s alarming increase in drug-related deaths.

Responding to a Public Health Emergency

The installation has arrived at a crucial moment. According to NRS most recent figures, there were 1,172 fatal cases of drug misuse by 2023 alone, representing a worrying rise of 12% from the previous year.

This upsurge resulted in authorities branding it as a public health emergency, with local government officers admitting that urgent solutions are required.

Allan Casey, who is Glasgow City Council’s convener for homelessness and addiction services, pointed out the significance of this new establishment in trying to reduce deaths from drug overdoses within Glasgow and its environs.

“This facility will offer a safe and clean environment for drug users under the supervision of medical staff, reducing the significant risks they face on the streets,” Casey noted.

The Facility Includes Injecting Booths And Medical Rooms

A New Approach to Fight Drug Addiction

Any number of 30 people can be accommodated at once in these premises, and it will operate all year round from 9 am to 9 pm. In this place, individuals have been allocated a maximum number of eight booths where they can safely inject drugs. Despite the controversy surrounding drug consumption rooms, they are considered as measures for reducing harm and providing support to those who are at highest risk.

This is part of a broader Scottish government initiative aimed at tackling what has become Europe’s worst drug crisis. The government hopes that through this pilot program which has an allocation of up to £2.3 million per year, it will be able to show the effectiveness of such facilities in mitigating harm, thus saving lives.

The project has, however, not been without its challenges. Nonetheless, an attempt to include a smoking room for illicit substances was dropped due to complexities associated with anti-tobacco legislation and issues concerning ventilation and filtration.

Nevertheless, it remains a pioneering endeavour, with Scotland’s Lord Advocate insisting that those found with drugs on them would face no charges if they were using the facility. This legal leniency is key to the success of the project, which seeks to engage with some of the most vulnerable people in the city.

“Glasgow has well-established recovery services,” Casey added, “but this facility adds another layer of support to help those most at risk.”
