Wales and parts of Shropshire are preparing for significant weather disruptions as the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain. The alert, which will last from 12 pm on Tuesday, April 15, to 12 pm on Wednesday, April 16, warns residents of persistent downpours and the risk of flooding.

Heavy rain, along with thundery showers in some areas, is expected to move northwards, with up to 75 mm of rain forecast in some places. These conditions are likely to result in slower travel times, with roads and public transport impacted. Authorities have urged residents to prepare for potential flooding and power cuts.

Areas affected by yellow weather warning

The Met Office has issued the yellow warning for 22 areas across Wales, including major cities such as Cardiff, Swansea, and Wrexham, as well as smaller towns and rural regions. Affected areas are expected to experience heavy rain throughout Tuesday, with conditions easing by dawn on Wednesday.

According to the Met Office, between 20 and 40 mm of rain is expected in most locations, with some areas receiving up to 75 mm.

The heavy rain could lead to localized flooding, especially on roads and in areas near rivers. The warning also highlights a high chance of transport disruptions, including delays on bus routes and train services.

This could significantly affect travel plans, particularly for commuters and those relying on public transport for longer journeys. Motorists are advised to check road conditions and adjust their plans accordingly.

Advice for residents and businesses

With the potential for power outages and flooding, residents are urged to take precautionary measures to protect their homes and businesses. According to the Met Office, checking whether properties are at risk of flooding is crucial.

People are advised to prepare an emergency flood kit, including essential items like torches, batteries, and mobile phone chargers, to cope with any disruption.

Businesses, particularly those in flood-prone areas, should also take steps to secure their premises. For those with specific concerns about flooding, the Met Office recommends developing a flood plan to minimise damage.

The heavy rain, although temporary, is expected to cause significant inconvenience for many in the affected regions, especially as the disruption extends into both the start and middle of the working week. With conditions potentially worsening, keeping informed about the latest weather updates will be essential for staying safe and prepared.
