The Department for Work and Pensions has launched a review of the Personal Independence Payment experience, inviting feedback on assessments, benefit decisions and communications as approximately 4 million people receive PIP across Britain.

DWP Seeks Feedback on How the PIP System Works

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is examining how people navigate the disability benefit system, with particular attention to problems that arise during applications, assessments and award decisions.

According to Birmingham Live, the department is seeking input from organizations working in the homelessness sector to understand where claimants experience difficulties and how existing procedures could be improved.

The DWP is “reviewing” the PIP journey and wants organizations with direct experience of supporting vulnerable people to contribute their observations.

The Labour government says the department is “keen to engage with stakeholders to understand their perspectives and gather any relevant evidence or insights on the customer experience, what works well and where there may be opportunities to improve.”

The exercise will examine both successful aspects of the current system and areas where claimants encounter obstacles. Officials are particularly interested in feedback from organizations familiar with the challenges faced by people seeking financial support while experiencing housing instability.

November 23 Deadline Confirmed for Two Online Workshops

The department has scheduled two informal engagement sessions later this month, giving participating organizations an opportunity to share their experiences directly with officials.

The first session will take place on Wednesday, November 25, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, while the second is scheduled for Thursday, November 26, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Both sessions will be held online via Microsoft Teams, follow the same agenda and last no longer than 90 minutes.

Both workshops will take place on Microsoft Teams, last no longer than 90 minutes and cover identical material. Participants therefore need to attend only one session.

The government has instructed interested stakeholders to email operational.stakeholders@dwp.gov.uk by Monday, November 23.

In its announcement, the department stated: “Both sessions will run on Microsoft Teams and cover the same material and will run for a maximum of 90 minutes.”

It added: “If you would like to attend a workshop, please email operational.stakeholders@dwp.gov.uk by Monday 23 November. You will then receive an invite for your chosen session.”

The invitation is directed at stakeholders, particularly homelessness sector organizations. It does not establish a new requirement for every PIP recipient to email the department.

PIP Assessments and Award Decisions Under Examination

The workshops will address several stages of the PIP application and award process, including how applicants understand requirements, communicate with officials and respond to decisions.

Officials want to hear about recurring difficulties involving assessments, the length of benefit awards and the clarity of information provided to claimants.

The discussions will also examine gaps in understanding that may prevent people from navigating the system effectively.

For claimants, these issues can affect how they prepare applications, understand assessment outcomes and manage their benefit awards.

The engagement exercise is designed to collect evidence and experiences rather than announce immediate changes to eligibility rules or payment amounts.

Government Also Announces New Measures for Care Leavers

The PIP consultation coincides with a separate government initiative focused on preventing homelessness among young people leaving the care system.

The Care Leaver Homelessness Reduction Action Plan, launched at the beginning of Care Leavers Month 2026, sets out additional responsibilities for local authorities to support young people moving from care into independent living.

The plan states that no young person should become homeless as a result of leaving care and introduces new duties for councils aimed at preventing that outcome.

Meanwhile, organizations wishing to contribute to the DWP’s PIP discussions must register by November 23, ahead of the two online sessions scheduled for November 25 and 26.
