According to the Birmingham Mail<\/a>, the new fee follows increases in both stamp and parcel prices. Royal Mail has confirmed the change while maintaining that customers can choose from several ways to send parcels, including doorstep collection and its wider network of postal facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Royal Mail spokesperson said parcel prices start at \u00a31.55 for items small enough to fit through a letterbox. The company also pointed to the convenience of having parcels collected directly from customers\u2019 homes by its postal workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Royal Mail operates more than 30,000 parcel points across the UK. Its network includes approximately 3,300 parcel lockers, 8,500 Royal Mail Shops, 11,500 Post Office branches, 1,200 customer service points and 5,500 parcel postboxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company <\/a>also has 115,000 traditional postboxes <\/strong>where small parcels can be posted. These facilities form part of the alternatives Royal Mail highlighted when responding to questions about its revised collection charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Royal Mail Plans 2,500 Job Cuts Amid Delivery Concerns and Restructuring<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The increase in collection charges coincides with Royal Mail<\/a>‘s announcement that it intends to cut up to 2,500 jobs. The proposed reductions will focus on head office positions and support functions, with the restructuring expected to be completed by the end of next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Birmingham Mail, the company is responding to intense competition and the continuing decline in letter deliveries. Royal Mail has also been fined a total of \u00a337 million<\/strong> since 2023 for failing to meet delivery targets established by the regulator Ofcom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Communication Workers Union (CWU<\/strong>), which represents frontline postal workers, said approximately 200 of its members working in administration and revenue protection would be affected by the proposed changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Martin Walsh, the union’s deputy general secretary, criticised the announcement, describing it as further evidence of a company struggling to support staff and meet customers’ expectations. He called for government intervention to protect Royal Mail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Royal Mail chief executive Alistair Cochrane defended the proposals, saying the business had been working to reduce costs and simplify its processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
