The government has confirmed that rates will rise in line with inflation, affecting petrol, diesel and electric vehicles.

The changes form part of the Treasury’s planned adjustments to road taxation, which are linked to the Retail Prices Index (RPI). While annual increases are already a feature of the system, the latest announcement comes as van operators face rising fuel costs and additional financial pressures.

Vehicle Excise Duty Changes Will Bring £375 Annual Charges for Vans

Under the changes scheduled for April 2027, vans registered on or after March 2001 will face revised VED charges, with different rates applying depending on their classification and emissions standards.

According to the Daily Express, analysis by motoring expert Pete Barden indicates that most vans in this category will face an annual tax charge of £375, compared with the current £360. This represents an increase of £15 when the new rates take effect on 1 April.

A separate rate of £140 will apply to early Euro 4 and Euro 5 compliant vans, alongside electric vans registered before 2011. Other vans covered by the revised system will fall into the £375 annual tax category.

The increase follows a similar adjustment introduced earlier in 2026, when the annual charge for affected vans rose from £345 to £360. The latest revision therefore continues the pattern of annual increases linked to inflation.

The changes will not be restricted to commercial vehicles. Petrol, diesel and electric car owners are also expected to face higher VED bills, with adjustments affecting standard annual rates, first-year charges and taxes applying to older vehicles.

According to the Treasury’s Budget report, the government intends to maintain its existing approach to annual tax adjustments. The document states: “The Government will uprate VED rates for cars, vans and motorcycles in line with the Retail Prices Index (RPI) from April 1, 2027.”

The announcement follows the Budget statement delivered by John Healey, with the revised rates due to come into force the following spring.

UK van tax to rise to £375 from April 2027 under new VED rules ©Canva

Rising Fuel Costs Add Pressure on Van Owners and Small Businesses

The planned VED increase comes during a period of financial pressure for people who depend on vans for work, particularly tradespeople and small business operators.

Fuel costs have already become a concern for commercial vehicle owners during 2026, with higher petrol and diesel prices affecting the cost of regular journeys.

According to the Daily Express, Howard Cox, founder of FairFuelUK, previously warned that a typical small van covering 20,000 miles annually could face an additional £360 in fuel costs because of price increases.

For businesses operating several vehicles, those costs can accumulate. Cox warned that a small company running three vans could face more than £1,000 in additional annual fuel expenditure alone. These figures concern fuel expenses rather than VED charges, although both contribute to the costs faced by businesses relying on commercial vehicles.

The government’s confirmed tax adjustment will take effect on 1 April 2027, when the revised annual rates for cars, vans and motorcycles are introduced.
