£363.25 for couples.

Eligibility depends on several factors, including pension income, employment earnings, other benefits and savings. Couples have their combined income assessed.

The DWP goes on to stipulate:

“If you have £10,000 or less in savings and investments this will not affect your Pension Credit.

“If you have more than £10,000, every £500 over £10,000 counts as £1 income a week. For example, if you have £11,000 in savings, this counts as £2 income a week.”

This calculation means that savings above the threshold can reduce the amount of Pension Credit a claimant receives. The rule treats part of the excess capital as weekly income, even when that money does not generate equivalent investment returns.

Pensioners whose income exceeds the standard guarantee levels may still qualify for support because of disability, caring responsibilities or eligible housing costs.

Budget Measures Extend Beyond Savings Verification

The Budget also outlines changes affecting benefit entitlement for certain offenders detained in hospitals.

Under the proposals, people convicted of the most serious violent or sexual offenses who are detained in hospital will lose entitlement to Universal Credit, Pension Credit and Employment and Support Allowance.

The government has also announced a new Pension Tax Allowance, intended to prevent pensioners with incomes at or below the full new State Pension amount from becoming liable for income tax solely because their State Pension increases during the current Parliament.

This measure forms part of a broader pension policy package that includes adjustments to the Triple Lock, the mechanism governing annual State Pension increases.

What Pension Credit Claimants Should Expect

For pensioners receiving Pension Credit, the most immediate implication of the verification plans is the possibility of being asked to confirm their financial holdings again.

The Budget announcement does not establish a new limit on how much claimants may save. Instead, it proposes additional checks to make sure declared capital accurately reflects their circumstances.

The government has also linked its wider pension settlement to plans for a National Care Service in England, intended to provide personal care free at the point of use.

For now, the existing Pension Credit calculation remains the reference point: savings of £10,000 or less do not affect entitlement, while each £500 above that threshold is counted as £1 in weekly income.

New government plans will introduce additional savings checks for Pension Credit claimants, with a £10,000 threshold affecting how benefits are calculated.

[45

post-128172","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-retirement","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-33","no-featured-image-padding
["GET
