It also clarifies what taxpayers need to report, which software they can use and what support will be available before the deadline.

HMRC Explains What Taxpayers Must Submit Before 7 November

According to the Mirror, HMRC has sought to reassure taxpayers that quarterly updates under Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax are not the same as submitting a full tax return.

Instead, each update provides a summary of income and expenses from self-employment or property. The information must be submitted through compatible software, but no tax calculation is required at this stage.

No payment is due when an update is submitted. A taxpayer’s overall tax position will only be calculated when they complete their tax return for the 2026 to 2027 tax year.

HMRC has also clarified that anyone who successfully submitted their first quarterly update in August does not need to check their registration status again or contact the department for confirmation.

Submission histories can be accessed through an HMRC online account or the software used to send the updates.

The department has addressed concerns about errors in digital records. If taxpayers discover incorrect information, they should amend their records as soon as possible.

Those corrections will appear in the next quarterly update, meaning previously submitted updates do not need to be resent.

Craig Ogilvie, HMRC’s director of Making Tax Digital, said thousands of sole traders and landlords had already completed their first submissions successfully.

“Customers can send their update any time before November 7 and I would encourage them to do so as early as possible to ensure they have everything in place before the deadline,” he said.

Hi Margaret

If the updates show as submitted in your software but remain outstanding in your online account, we recommend contacting your software provider first. Free options are also available for taxpayers with simpler financial affairs, although restrictions may apply.

HMRC advises users to check that their chosen software supports their income sources and reporting requirements.
