The UK withdrew from Erasmus in 2020, replacing it with the Turing Scheme. Its return follows an agreement reached with Brussels as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation in education and other areas.

Applications Open in November for Students, Apprentices and Educators

Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer confirmed the timetable in the House of Commons on 27 October, explaining that the programme would extend well beyond traditional university exchanges.

According to The Independent, Falconer told MPs that applications would open in November and that opportunities would be available to educational institutions of all kinds, rather than exclusively to undergraduate students.

Further education students and apprentices will be eligible for work placements in European companies. Adult learners, school groups and sports coaches will also be able to participate in exchanges, while education staff can undertake training and job-shadowing placements abroad.

The range of activities reflects the wider scope of Erasmus+, which supports educational mobility and cooperation between participating organisations. The Government expects more than 100,000 people to benefit during the first year of Britain’s renewed participation. It has also highlighted the potential benefits for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly in relation to longer-term career opportunities.

Falconer encouraged MPs from across Parliament to work with the British Council and help educational institutions become involved in the programme. The British Council is expected to serve as the UK’s Erasmus+ National Agency, supporting organisations seeking access to funding and helping participants understand the opportunities available.
