Millions of older UK pensioners are set for higher payments from April 2027, with the full basic State Pension expected to rise to around £832 a month under the triple lock.

The increase applies to people who reached State Pension age before April 6, 2016 and receive the full basic State Pension. The current weekly rate is around £184.90. A 3.9% rise would take it to approximately £192.10.

That works out at around £832 a month when the annual payment is divided across 12 months. Over a full year, the payment would be close to £9,989, an annual increase of around £374.

People who receive the newer State Pension are due to receive a higher amount. The full new State Pension is expected to rise from around £241.30 to £250.70 a week from April 2027.

That would take the annual payment to approximately £13,036. The difference between the two rates reflects the separate pension systems used for people who reached State Pension age before and after April 2016.

The basic State Pension is not the only payment some older pensioners can receive. Certain people may have additional entitlement from previous arrangements, including SERPS, which can raise their overall pension income.

This means that the amount received by an individual pensioner can be higher than the basic State Pension rate. The actual payment depends on each person’s pension record and additional entitlements.

The increase for 2027 comes while the government is planning changes to the triple lock. The current system uses the highest of inflation, earnings growth or 2.5% when setting the annual State Pension increase.

The government plans to remove the earnings element from 2030, creating what has been described as a double lock based on inflation or 2.5%, whichever is higher. The proposed change is linked to plans for a new national social care service.

Older Pensioners Are Set For A 3.9% Increase
