The clarification, published on Monday, 19 October 2026, comes as the Government launches another campaign encouraging hundreds of thousands of older people to check whether they qualify for financial support. Pension Credit is worth more than £4,500 a year on average, yet many eligible households remain without the benefit.

According to the Department for Work and Pensions, the correction relates to two instances in its 13 October announcement where the phrase “an extra 33,500 applications” should have read “an extra 33,500 awards”.

The distinction confirms that the figure represents additional benefit awards rather than applications submitted. The department attributed the increase to its previous Pension Credit awareness campaign, which ran throughout 2025.

The latest initiative will see 660,000 information leaflets distributed across seven areas with high proportions of low-income pensioners. These include Glasgow, Powys, Stockton-on-Tees, inland Cornwall, Birmingham, East Suffolk and Manchester.

The leaflets explain how pensioners can check their eligibility, apply for support and help relatives make claims. Recipients are also encouraged to keep the information on their fridge for future reference. The campaign addresses misconceptions about eligibility, including the belief that owning a home or having savings automatically prevents someone from receiving Pension Credit.

Around 1.4 million pensioner households already receive the benefit. The latest effort forms part of the department’s Pension Credit Week of Action, supported by advertising across television, radio, newspapers and social media, including a partnership with ITV’s The Chase.
