We’re excited to learn from the launch in York and Exeter as we explore whether the offer could support more communities across the UK,” Rodrigues said.

The Milky Way Adventure Park, one of the participating businesses, welcomed the initiative, saying it hoped to attract both new and returning visitors while supporting its local community.

The trial also comes as Lloyds Banking Group continues reducing its physical branch network. According to the Daily Express, the group, which includes Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, is closing 232 branches during 2026.

Once the planned closures are completed, the group will have 610 branches remaining. Lloyds maintains that the growing use of online banking has made some physical branches commercially unviable.

The wider decline is longstanding. Figures from the British Banking Association and the Office for National Statistics cited by the report show that Britain had 21,643 bank and building society branches in 1986, compared with 6,870 in 2024. For now, the cashback programme remains limited to York and Exeter. Lloyds has expressed interest in extending the scheme to other communities, but has not announced further locations or a timetable for expansion.
