Parts of northern Scotland are facing strong winds on Wednesday, 14 October, after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning covering the Highlands and Outer Hebrides. Gusts could reach 70mph in exposed locations, with transport disruption and temporary power cuts among the possible consequences.

The warning will remain in force from 10am until 7pm, with the strongest winds expected around late morning and early afternoon. According to the Met Office, conditions should gradually improve later in the day, although heavy rain is forecast to reach northwest Scotland by the evening.

The yellow warning covers Highland and Na h-Eileanan Siar, where strong south to southwesterly winds are expected throughout Wednesday. Forecasters predict widespread gusts of 50 to 60mph, rising to around 70mph along exposed coastlines and in hilly areas.

According to the Met Office, the warning carries a high likelihood of occurrence, estimated at 50 to 75 per cent, with a moderate level of potential impact. It was issued at 8.51am BST on Tuesday, 13 October.

Transport services are among the main concerns. Road, air and ferry journeys could face delays, while some bus and train services may also be affected. Travellers could experience longer journey times, particularly where routes are exposed to the strongest winds.

Drivers of high-sided vehicles face additional difficulties on exposed roads and bridges. The weather agency has advised motorists to check road conditions before setting out and encouraged passengers to consult public transport timetables.

Temporary interruptions to electricity supplies and other services are also possible. Residents have been advised to prepare for potential power cuts by keeping torches, batteries and portable mobile phone chargers available.

The strongest gusts are forecast for late morning and early afternoon. Winds should then ease from the west during the late afternoon and early evening, with the warning scheduled to expire at 7pm.

Strong Winds Threaten Transport Services Across Northern Scotland
