Millions of older people across the UK could receive up to £300 toward their heating bills this winter, with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) opening telephone claims for the 2026–2027 Winter Fuel Payment on October 19.

DWP Confirms October 19 Date for Winter Fuel Payment Claims

According to Birmingham Live, the DWP has confirmed that eligible pensioners who need to apply can begin making telephone claims on October 19, 2026. Postal applications have been available since September.

The Winter Fuel Payment provides financial assistance to older residents during the colder months, when household heating costs typically rise. Eligible recipients can receive between £100 and £300, depending on their age and personal circumstances.

To qualify for the 2026–2027 payment, applicants must have been born on or before June 27, 1960.

The DWP assesses eligibility and payment amounts using circumstances during a designated seven-day period, known as the Qualifying Week. This year, that period ran from September 21 to September 27, 2026.

For people who meet the requirements, the payment could provide additional support as winter approaches.

Millions Could Receive Their Money Without Making a Claim

Many eligible pensioners will not need to submit an application.

The DWP generally arranges payments automatically for people already receiving the State Pension, Pension Credit, or certain other government benefits.

Automatic payments also apply to people receiving Universal Credit, Attendance Allowance, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Carer’s Allowance, Disability Living Allowance (DLA), and income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA). Recipients of awards from the War Pensions Scheme, Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit, Incapacity Benefit, and Industrial Death Benefit are also covered by the automatic payment arrangements.

People receiving these benefits generally do not need to contact the department simply to request their Winter Fuel Payment.

The distinction matters because not every eligible older person receives the money automatically.

Those who have never received a Winter Fuel Payment and do not qualify for automatic payment may need to make their first claim.

The same applies to people who have deferred their State Pension since their previous Winter Fuel Payment, provided they are not receiving another benefit that triggers an automatic payment.

When Will the £100 to £300 Payments Arrive?

The DWP normally aims to distribute Winter Fuel Payments during November and December, allowing recipients to use the money during the winter heating season.

Payment amounts depend on age and household circumstances during the September Qualifying Week.

For the 2026–2027 winter, the department has also established a date for people who have not received their expected support.

Anyone who has neither received a payment nor been sent a notification letter by January 27, 2027, should contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.

Recipients should also be aware that the amount paid and the amount ultimately retained may differ under income-related recovery rules. For winter 2026–2027, people with annual income above £35,000 may have their Winter Fuel Payment recovered through the tax system.

How to Claim Before the March 2027 Deadline

Eligible people who need to apply can contact the Winter Fuel Payment helpline on 0800 731 0160 once telephone claims open on October 19.

Postal claims can be sent to:
