Yet colder weather alone does not guarantee a payment. A specific temperature threshold must be reached over seven consecutive days before the money becomes available, meaning the timing will depend on local weather conditions.

How the £25 Cold Weather Payment Scheme Works

Under the government’s rules, eligible households receive £25 for each seven-day period when the average temperature in their area is recorded as, or forecast to be, 0°C or below. Payments can be made more than once during the winter if separate qualifying periods occur.

According to the Daily Express, the 2026/27 scheme has not yet begun, with the first possible qualifying period starting on 1 November. Once the required conditions have been met, payments should normally reach recipients within 14 working days.

The money is paid automatically, so households generally do not need to submit an application. The payments also have no effect on other benefits received by eligible individuals.

Not everyone receiving financial support will qualify. The scheme covers people receiving certain benefits, including Pension Credit, Universal Credit and Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), as well as those receiving Support for Mortgage Interest, subject to the relevant eligibility conditions.

There are also geographical differences. Cold Weather Payments are not available in Scotland, where eligible households may instead receive an annual Winter Heating Payment. Unlike the DWP scheme, that support is not dependent on local temperatures reaching a particular threshold. The payments are separate from the Winter Fuel Payment and other government assistance intended to help households meet heating costs.

Eligible households could receive £25 between 1 November 2026 and 31 March 2027 ©Canva

When Freezing Temperatures Could Trigger Payments This Winter

Although the scheme opens in November, the first payments may not arrive immediately. According to BirminghamLive, payments are more likely to be triggered during December or January, although an earlier cold spell could also meet the qualifying conditions.

The Met Office has forecast a return to more typical autumn weather following an unusually mild start to October. Cooler air is expected to spread southwards, accompanied by rain, showers and strengthening winds.

Looking further ahead, conditions are expected to remain changeable throughout October. Atlantic weather systems could bring further rain and strong winds, particularly to western and north-western areas, alongside occasional cooler spells. According to the Daily Express, temperatures are nevertheless expected to remain near or slightly above average for much of the period. This means a general drop in temperatures will not necessarily be enough to activate the scheme.

The government also advises households to report certain changes in circumstances, including the birth of a baby or a child under five moving into their home, where relevant. For those who qualify, the £25 payments will remain available throughout the winter scheme until 31 March 2027.
