Symptoms can also include headaches, while diarrhoea may sometimes contain blood.

According to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, symptoms typically develop between 12 and 36 hours after infection, although they can appear anywhere between six and 72 hours. Illness generally lasts between four and seven days.

In some cases, diarrhoea can become severe enough to require hospital admission. Infants, older people and those with weakened immune systems face a greater risk of serious illness.

The Food Standards Agency advises people experiencing symptoms to remain away from work, school or nursery until they have been symptom-free for at least 48 hours. This measure is intended to reduce the risk of passing the infection to others.

The latest action follows another Greencore recall in August, when three pasta products sold at Asda and Morrisons were withdrawn because of possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. For the current recall, consumers are advised not to eat any affected products, even if they have not developed symptoms. The recall applies only to the specified products and use-by dates, with refunds available through the retailers.

Five ready-to-eat food products sold at Marks & Spencer and Tesco have been recalled over concerns that they may contain Salmonella.
