The government has announced three measures aimed at easing household costs, including changes to fuel price information, electricity bills and bus fares. The measures include potential annual savings of £40 for motorists and £45 on household electricity bills.

The announcement comes as families across the UK continue to face higher living costs, with ministers pointing to overseas conflicts as a factor behind rising prices. According to the Birmingham Mail, the measures were highlighted on Thursday, 8 October, with Andy Burnham among the political figures associated with the announcement.

Google Maps Fuel Price Updates Could Save Motorists £40 Annually

Drivers across the UK can now access near-real-time petrol and diesel prices through Google Maps, following a government announcement on Thursday, 8 October. The change is intended to make it easier for motorists to compare prices at filling stations before purchasing fuel.

According to the Birmingham Mail, ministers estimate that motorists could save an average of £40 a year by using the information to identify cheaper fuel. The initiative forms part of the government’s wider response to household affordability pressures.

Miatta Fahnbulleh, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, said improving affordability remained a government priority. In a statement posted on X, she explained that working with Google Maps would help families with cars identify lower prices at the pump.

Energy Consumers Minister Polly Billington also welcomed the development, arguing that access to affordable fuel should be straightforward for drivers and businesses. For many households, petrol and diesel are necessary expenses rather than discretionary purchases. Billington said the availability of near-real-time prices represented a significant change in how drivers could identify the cheapest available fuel.

The announcement nevertheless prompted criticism from some motorists. One social media user questioned whether the estimated savings were sufficient, arguing that the government was receiving additional tax revenue from higher fuel prices. The reaction highlighted dissatisfaction among some drivers despite the government’s emphasis on helping consumers make more informed purchasing decisions.
