The figures describe a potential stress scenario rather than a prediction that Britain will run out of gas this winter.

The EU is facing a winter gas shortage that could leave it scrambling to replace lost energy supplies equivalent to the power used by 12 million homes, according to new reports shared with POLITICO.https://t.co/MRDV3INBaE
— POLITICOEurope (@POLITICOEurope) October 9, 2026

Low European Storage Adds to the Concern

European gas storage facilities were around 72% full on October 1, according to the figures cited in the report. Storage sites are used to provide additional gas when demand rises, particularly during periods of cold weather.

Britain also relies on the wider European market and international imports when domestic production and stored supplies do not meet demand.

The combination of lower storage levels and volatile international prices has raised concerns about the cost of securing additional supplies.

Households Could Face Higher Energy Bills

A shortage of available gas could put further upward pressure on wholesale prices. Britain’s energy market is closely linked to international gas prices, meaning higher wholesale costs can eventually feed through into household bills.

Cornwall Insight has already forecast that the typical annual energy bill could rise by £276 to £1,999 in January, based on its latest prediction for the Ofgem price cap. Households are already facing a higher cap from October, when the typical annual bill increased by £60 to £1,723.

The figures apply to a typical household and do not represent a fixed amount that every household will pay.

© Econostrum

UK Could Turn to More Expensive Imports

If domestic and European supplies become tighter, Britain could need to purchase additional liquefied natural gas (LNG) from international suppliers. US LNG could form part of that supply, although the price would depend on conditions in the global gas market.

Greater reliance on international cargoes also leaves Britain exposed to changes in global demand, shipping conditions and energy policy. The report comes as disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz have added uncertainty to international energy markets.

Rough Storage Facility Is Due to Close

Another concern is the future of the Rough gas storage facility in the North Sea. Owned by Centrica, Rough has historically provided a large storage capacity for the UK. The facility is currently operating at a minimum level and is scheduled to close completely by April 2027.

Centrica chief executive Chris O’Shea warned in July that UK gas storage levels were extremely low. He said a particularly cold winter could create supply problems if the country entered the season with insufficient gas in storage.

Jackdaw Gas Field Is Also Part of the Debate

The government could also face renewed pressure over domestic North Sea production. One proposal involves the Jackdaw gas field, which its owners say could account for around 6% of UK gas production at peak output.

The field was approved by the previous Conservative government in 2022 but has faced delays linked to environmental concerns. Supporters argue that additional domestic production could reduce reliance on imports, while opponents have raised environmental and climate concerns.

Government Says Gas Supply Remains Secure

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has rejected the suggestion that Britain is facing an immediate supply crisis. A government spokesperson said the UK has a diverse energy mix and remains confident in its security of supply.

The department also said gas is traded on the international market and argued that the price is not directly determined by the amount of gas held in storage. According to the department, storage accounted for only around 5% of the UK’s gas supply last winter.

A Cold Winter Would Put the System to the Test

The central concern is therefore not that Britain is certain to run out of gas, but that cold weather combined with tight European supplies could put additional pressure on the market.

If demand rises sharply, Britain may need to compete for international gas cargoes at a time when prices are already volatile. That could create another source of pressure for households heading into a winter when energy costs are already expected to rise.

For consumers, the scale of any eventual increase will depend on weather conditions, international gas availability and wholesale prices in the months ahead.

Britain is facing fresh concerns over its gas supplies as winter approaches.
