The programme, announced on 5 October, will run until 2029 as part of the government’s renewed approach to women’s health.

According to the Department of Health and Social Care, the partnership is intended to improve breast awareness, strengthen access to reliable information and give patients more guidance after treatment. It will also include additional training for healthcare professionals, with an emphasis on helping women identify possible signs that breast cancer has returned or spread.

The initiative places early diagnosis at the centre of its approach. Breast cancer outcomes can differ sharply depending on the stage at which the disease is detected, making awareness of unusual breast changes and timely medical assessment a central part of the programme.

It also extends beyond diagnosis and treatment. Women completing breast cancer care are expected to receive information about maintaining a healthy lifestyle, recognising possible signs of recurrence and knowing where to seek further help.

Earlier Diagnosis Remains at the Centre of the Strategy

According to Baroness Merron, Minister for Women’s Health and Maternity, advances in research and treatment have significantly improved breast cancer survival, but early diagnosis remains closely linked to better outcomes.

According to BirminghamLive, she said women should feel confident checking their breasts, recognising possible symptoms and contacting a GP when they notice a new or unusual change. “The sooner breast cancer is diagnosed, the better the chances of successful treatment, and the more lives we will save,” she said.

The partnership forms part of the government’s Renewed Women’s Health Strategy, which is intended to provide health information in ways that are accessible to women at different stages of their lives.

The emphasis on awareness reflects substantial differences in survival by stage of diagnosis. According to Breast Cancer Now, almost 100% of people diagnosed with breast cancer at stage 1 survive for five years or more. At stage 4, when the cancer has spread to other parts of the body and is considered incurable, the five-year survival figure is 32%. Those figures underline why health organisations continue to encourage people to report breast changes promptly rather than waiting for symptoms to develop further.

If you do one thing this #BreastCancerAwareness month, make it learning about what you should look out for when checking your breasts regularly.

Get used to checking regularly and be aware of anything that’s new or different for you.

➡️ https://t.co/678RsoLh9l pic.twitter.com/JXolfqXvVu
— NHS (@NHSuk) October 1, 2026

Support Will Continue Beyond Breast Cancer Treatment

The programme is also designed to address what happens after active treatment ends, a period when some patients may face uncertainty about symptoms, recovery and the possibility of recurrence.

According to the Department of Health and Social Care, women will receive clearer post-treatment information, including guidance on possible signs that breast cancer has returned or spread. Advice on healthy living after treatment will also form part of the partnership.

Rachel Franklin, Deputy Chief Executive of Breast Cancer Now, said the charity was “hugely proud” to become the first partner involved in the Renewed Women’s Health Strategy.
