Petrol stood at an average of 174.61p per litre, up almost 42p over the same period. The Mirror also reported that motorway service stations were typically charging close to 217p per litre for diesel. The publication said around 9.5 million diesel drivers in the UK are affected, alongside businesses that depend on road transport.

RAC head of policy Simon Williams said the average diesel price had reached “the highest level in UK history”, adding that the cost of filling an average family car was now almost £110, around £31 more than at the start of the conflict.

The Daily Express reported that Chancellor John Healey had said he was “concerned” about the rise in petrol and diesel prices.
