The Government\u2019s road safety strategy states that it plans to introduce penalty points for failing to wear a <strong>seatbelt <\/strong>and additional penalty points for drivers who do not make sure <strong>child passengers<\/strong> are wearing seatbelts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The strategy refers to the introduction of mandatory seatbelts in 1991 as one of the most effective road safety measures. It also states that people continue to die in collisions while not wearing seatbelts. According to the strategy, 25% of car occupant fatalities in 2024 involved people who were not wearing seatbelts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The current UK penalty system also has separate rules for new drivers. The Government\u2019s strategy identifies seatbelt use as an area where further action is being considered to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured in collisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Separate warnings have also been issued to motorists about insurance requirements when buying or testing new vehicles. According to insurance specialist <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.linkedin.com\/in\/tomwarsop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tom Warsop<\/a> from Covertime.com, some drivers assume they are automatically covered when test driving or collecting a new car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Warsop said drivers should check what<strong> insurance cover<\/strong> is available before driving a vehicle. Dealership insurance arrangements can vary, and some policies may include restrictions such as age limits, licence conditions or excess payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Driving without insurance remains illegal and can result in a<strong> \u00a3300 fine<\/strong> and six penalty points. More serious cases can lead to an unlimited fine, a driving ban or vehicle seizure.
