The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has started contacting selected Pension Credit claimants as part of a review process examining whether payments match current circumstances.

The checks are focused on making sure retirees receive the correct level of support, with some people asked to provide information such as recent bank statements.

DWP Reviews Pension Credit Claims From Selected Customers

According to Birmingham Live, the DWP confirmed that selected customers are being contacted as part of ongoing Pension Credit case reviews.

In its Touchbase newsletter, the DWP said: “DWP has started contacting selected customers as part of Pension Credit case reviews to help make sure they are receiving the correct amount of Pension Credit.”

The department added: “As part of the reviews, some customers may be asked for additional information, such as recent bank statements. Being selected for a review does not mean the customer has done anything wrong.”

The DWP said the review process is designed to check that claim information remains accurate and reflects each claimant’s current situation.

Age UK Offers Guidance To Pension Credit Claimants

Age UK said the reviews are routine checks carried out to ensure people receive the correct amount of Pension Credit.

The charity said: “The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has started contacting some Pension Credit customers as part of routine case reviews.

“These reviews are being carried out to make sure people are receiving the correct amount of Pension Credit.

“If you are selected for a review, the DWP may ask you to provide some additional information, such as recent bank statements. Being selected for a review does not mean you have done anything wrong.”

Age UK added that claimants would receive an explanation if a review changes their award.

“If the review results in a change to your Pension Credit award, the DWP will explain what has changed and what you need to do next. They have said they will treat customers fairly and sensitively throughout the process.”

The charity also advised people who need assistance to contact the DWP directly on 0800 731 0469.

Pension Credit Rules And The Reason Behind The Checks

Pension Credit is a means-tested benefit for people above state pension age who have a low income. Around 1.4 million households currently receive the support.

The review follows a wider examination of the scheme launched by former chancellor Rachel Reeves. The review is expected to contribute to savings of around £370 million from the wider welfare budget.

Former pensions minister Sir Steve Webb, now a partner at LCP, said benefit recipients are required to report changes in circumstances, including changes to savings.

He said some people may not realise they need to update the DWP, meaning information held by the department can become outdated.

Sir Steve Webb also said large-scale reviews can create concerns among the public, with some people viewing requests for financial information as intrusive.

DWP Says Reviews Do Not Mean Claimants Have Done Anything Wrong

The DWP and Age UK have both stated that being selected for a review does not indicate wrongdoing.

Age UK said: “If you have questions or need support, you can contact the DWP directly on 0800 731 0469.

“If you are unsure about a request for information or need help understanding your Pension Credit, support is available.”
