According to the August LA Welfare Direct bulletin<\/strong>, the exercise introduced a minimum three-year review period for affected awards and increased the number of automated notifications sent to local authorities for PIP and other related benefits, including Carer\u2019s Allowance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Existing PIP Awards Receive Longer Planned Review Periods<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A Recommended Review Period is the point at which the DWP plans to check whether a claimant remains entitled to PIP and whether they are receiving the correct level of support<\/strong>. The completed exercise means that affected existing awards now have a planned review period of at least three years. The change does not remove the requirement for claimants to report relevant changes in their circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PIP is based on how a disability <\/a>or long-term physical or mental health condition affects a person\u2019s ability to carry out certain daily living and mobility activities. It is not means-tested<\/strong>, meaning entitlement is not affected by income or savings and people can receive it whether they are working or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a review takes place, claimants usually continue receiving PIP while the process is completed. The DWP sends a letter and review form requesting information about any changes to their condition <\/strong>or the way it affects their daily lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the DWP guidance<\/a>, review periods continue to depend on individual circumstances. Shorter review periods<\/strong> may apply when a person is expected to recover or experience a significant improvement in their condition within a shorter timeframe. Longer review periods can also continue for people with severe or long-term conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Rules for Future PIP Awards Remain Linked to Individual Circumstances<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Since April 2026, most new PIP awards for people aged 25 and over have been set to last four years, with a review planned after three years<\/strong>. If a claimant remains entitled after that review, their following award will generally last six years, with a review after five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to official PIP<\/a> statistics published in September, most new awards made to people aged 25 and over since April 2026 follow the four-year award structure with a review after three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The length of each award is still decided according to the claimant\u2019s circumstances. The DWP can set different review periods where a person\u2019s condition, expected changes or support needs indicate that a different timeframe is appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The changes announced by the DWP apply to claimants in England and Wales. Scotland operates a separate disability benefit system, where Adult Disability Payment <\/strong>has replaced PIP for new and existing claimants and is administered by Social Security Scotland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The department said the increase in automated notifications linked to the completed review exercise should now return to normal levels.
