The comments come after calls from the Institute for Fiscal Studies for the government to encourage more households to move towards smart electricity tariffs. The discussion focuses on how flexible energy use could affect household bills and demand on the electricity system.

Smart Tariffs Show Savings From Changing Electricity Habits

Octopus Energy said more than one million customers are now using its smart tariffs, while around three million regularly take part in schemes that manage energy demand through flexible use.

According to Octopus Energy, customers using its Intelligent Octopus Go tariff for electric vehicles can pay around £200 to charge an electric car for 10,000 miles at home, compared with around £1,700 for petrol. The company said this represents a saving of around £1,500.

The energy supplier also shared figures linked to its Cosy tariff, which is designed for households with heat pumps, electric radiators or electric boilers. Octopus said customers on the tariff save around £230 a year on heating costs compared with households using a gas boiler.

The Cosy tariff uses three periods of cheaper electricity each day, between 04:00 and 07:00, 13:00 and 16:00, and 22:00 and 00:00. Octopus states that these periods are priced 51% lower than the daytime rate in the relevant region, while the peak rate between 16:00 and 19:00 is 50% higher than the daytime rate.

Alex Schoch, director of electrification at Octopus Energy, said: “Smart tariffs turn the electricity market on its head – instead of paying more when demand is high, people can save money by using energy when it’s cheapest and greenest.”

Industry Figures Discuss Wider Use of Flexible Tariffs

The expansion of smart tariffs has also drawn attention from energy analysts and industry representatives. According to Dr Matthew Chadwick, lead research analyst at Cornwall Insight, smart tariffs could be adapted for different household circumstances, including people with different working patterns or specific energy needs.

Chadwick said suppliers could use consumption data alongside demographic information to create tariffs based on how people use energy in daily life. He added that time-of-use tariffs could move from being used by a limited number of households to wider adoption.

Suket Singhal, group CEO at Secure Meters, said the industry could use information from smart meters installed in British homes to help households manage bills. He noted that around 70% of British homes have smart meters installed.

Octopus Energy’s figures also highlight differences between households using electric vehicles and those without them. The company said households with electric vehicles generally have 4-6% higher peak electricity demand than households without them. It added that vehicles capable of vehicle-to-grid charging can have negative peak demand compared with households using petrol or diesel cars.

The figures presented by Octopus focus on existing customers and current smart tariff schemes. The company said increasing participation in flexible energy use could help create a more adaptable electricity system while allowing households to access different pricing options.
