Millions of parents in the UK will be temporarily unable to access their Child Benefit details online while HM Revenue & Customs carries out planned maintenance on its digital service. The shutdown affects the online tool used by claimants to check and update information linked to their claims.

The service will close from 10pm on Friday 18 September 2026 until 2am on Saturday 19 September 2026. HMRC has said the closure is limited to online access and does not affect Child Benefit payments.

Scheduled Maintenance Limits Access to Child Benefit Tools

Parents who need to report changes to their circumstances or manage their claim online will have to wait until the service reopens. According to HMRC’s service availability guidance, the Child Benefit service is otherwise operating normally, with no other reported issues.

HMRC said: “Due to scheduled maintenance, you will be unable to access our online service from 10pm on Friday 18 September 2026 to 2am on Saturday 19 September 2026.” The tax authority added: “We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

The online service allows parents to make changes that could affect their Child Benefit claim. This includes updating details connected to their entitlement. For most families, Child Benefit is paid every four weeks.

The warning does not indicate a suspension or delay to payments. It relates only to the availability of the online platform during the maintenance window. Parents who need to make changes to their claim have been advised to avoid waiting until the period when the service is unavailable.
