Thousands of older households may be able to remove their TV licence bill entirely if they meet age and income rules linked to Pension Credit. The support does not arrive automatically, and eligible pensioners must make a claim before applying for a free licence.

Who Can Qualify For A Free Tv Licence

The TV licence currently costs £180 a year, and most households need one if they watch live television broadcasts or use BBC iPlayer. Some pensioners can avoid paying the full charge, but reaching state pension age alone does not guarantee free access.

People generally need to be aged 75 or over and receiving Pension Credit to qualify. Based on the current rules, pensioners born in September 1952 or earlier meet the age requirement as of this month.

Income is also considered. Pension Credit is designed for people with lower incomes, with eligibility based around weekly income levels of about £238 for single claimants and £363 for couples.

Pension Credit Is The Key Step For Eligible Households

Many people who reached state pension age before April 2016 receive the older basic state pension, which pays £184.90 per week. Without additional income or savings affecting their circumstances, some of these pensioners may qualify for Pension Credit.

The benefit is not automatically added to a pension payment. Applicants must contact the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and complete a claim.

According to Express, pensioners already receiving Pension Credit can then apply for a free TV licence once they reach the required age.

TV Licensing says:

“You can apply for a free TV licence if you, as the licence holder, are 75 years or older AND you, or your partner living at the same address, receive Pension Credit.”

The organisation also states: “If you already receive Pension Credit, you can apply for your free licence when you are 74 years old. We’ll update your payments to cover you until your 75th birthday, and then you’ll be covered by your free licence. We’ll confirm this in writing.”

Other Ways Households Can Reduce The Bill

Pensioners who do not qualify for Pension Credit may still be able to lower their TV licence costs in specific situations.

If someone in the household is legally blind, the licence fee can be reduced by half. A single person in the home meeting the legal blindness criteria can allow the entire household to pay a reduced rate of £90.

The reduction applies to the household licence rather than only the individual who qualifies, meaning other people living at the same address can benefit from the lower charge.

Checking Eligibility Before Paying The Full Amount

The rules mean some older households could be paying a bill they may no longer need to cover. Pensioners who think they might qualify for Pension Credit need to submit a claim rather than assume they are not eligible.

After a successful Pension Credit application, they can use that award as part of their application for a free TV licence.

TV Licensing confirms that existing Pension Credit recipients can apply before their 75th birthday, with payments adjusted until the free licence begins.
