England will introduce new school food standards from 2027, banning deep-fried food and changing what millions of pupils can receive during school meals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reforms will increase fruit, vegetables, fibre and wholegrain options while bringing breakfast clubs under formal nutrition rules for the first time. The government says the changes aim to improve children\u2019s diets, support learning and address childhood obesity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Rules Reshape School Lunch Menus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Under the new framework, schools in England <\/a>will need to reduce some popular menu items and introduce healthier alternatives. Deep-fried chips will be replaced with oven-baked versions, while pasta dishes must contain 50% wholewheat once a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sweet desserts<\/strong> such as cake will be limited to twice a week in secondary schools and once a week in primary schools. Each dessert serving must also include a portion of fruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Processed meats, including ham, sausages and chicken nuggets, will be restricted to once a week and must be served with fruit or vegetables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Education Secretary Lucy Powell<\/em> described the measures as “once-in-a-generation changes” which would “transform school food for children across the country”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Government Links Nutrition Changes To Children\u2019s Wellbeing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to the BBC<\/a><\/em>, the Department for Education expects the reforms to improve nutrition, concentration, learning and wellbeing among pupils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools will be required to publish their food policies and menus online, while monitoring arrangements will be developed with the Food Standards Agency<\/em>. The changes will be funded through existing school budgets and schools will receive a year to prepare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breakfast clubs will also face new requirements. From next September, pastries and fried eggs will no longer be allowed, cereal products will face sugar limits, and options such as Coco Pops<\/em> and chocolate spread will be removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

School Leaders Welcome Health Goals But Warn About Pressure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Association of School and College Leaders<\/em> welcomed the direction of the reforms but raised concerns about enforcement and resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ASCL general secretary Pepe Di\u2019Iasio<\/em> said parents would feel reassured that schools were providing healthier meals. He also warned against creating additional pressure for school leaders, saying: “None of us would consider ourselves experts in health and nutrition. Don’t create another stick with which to beat head teachers when they are trying to do their very best to provide a healthy, balanced meal for those in our schools.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said schools needed more investment in catering facilities and training for school chefs to develop menus that match the government\u2019s plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schools Minister Georgia Gould<\/em> said the government was confident schools could deliver the changes within current budgets and would support them in redesigning affordable menus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Families Report Benefits From Expanded School Meal Access<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Some schools have already seen the impact of expanded meal access. At Oasis Academy Blakenhale<\/em> in Birmingham, principal Farzana Ahmed<\/em> welcomed the reforms and highlighted the role of school meals in supporting families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The more children that can access a hot, nutritious meal, the better it is for us, the better it is for them, and actually it really supports families with the reduction of their financial pressures at home,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The school already provides balanced meals and expects around 70% of its pupils to benefit after eligibility for free school meals expanded to families receiving Universal Credit<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parent Kinza Butt<\/em> said the meals had reduced financial pressure and improved her son\u2019s experience at school, explaining that he no longer relied on cold sandwiches and returned home happier after eating healthier food during the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Different School Food Standards Across The Uk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The new rules apply only to schools in England, while the other nations of the United Kingdom follow separate systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wales is introducing new guidance focused on offering at least two portions of vegetables daily, with only water, milk or plant-based drinks allowed for hydration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scotland updated its school food legislation in 2020, requiring students to receive two portions of vegetables and one portion of fruit each day, with oily fish served at least once every three weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Northern Ireland\u2019s regulations were last updated in 2007 and require schools to provide daily bread, along with two portions of fruit and vegetables each day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
