According to the DfT, some travellers were forced to abandon journeys, wait for confirmation or purchase replacement tickets when services were cancelled.

Transport Focus, the independent passenger watchdog, said the updated approach should make disrupted journeys easier. Chief executive Alex Robertson said passengers mainly want to reach their destinations rather than deal with uncertainty over whether their ticket will be accepted on another train.

“When passengers are delayed, they just want to get where they need to be, not worry about whether their ticket will be accepted on another train,” Robertson said.

The organisation said clear communication would remain important when disruption occurs, so passengers understand their available options.
