The 27-acre Trafford Park site opened in 1938 and was once one of the largest cereal factories in Europe. At its busiest, the plant produced about one million boxes of cereal <\/strong>a day, including Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies and Coco Pops, before changes to the company\u2019s manufacturing network led to plans for its closure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although production has now stopped, the site itself will remain open until the end of 2026. Owner Kellanova first announced the closure plan in 2024 after discussions with employees and union representatives, saying the investment required to modernise and maintain the factory was no longer viable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An 88-Year Manufacturing History Comes to an End<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Kellogg\u2019s began exporting cereal to Britain in 1922, 16 years before opening its Trafford Park factory. The Manchester plant subsequently became a long-standing part of the company\u2019s UK manufacturing operations and a recognisable local landmark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the BBC, the factory was designed around a production system in which food travelled up and down six floors<\/strong>. Kellanova had previously said the layout made sense when the facility was built in the 1930s but was poorly suited to modern manufacturing requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company also said only about half of the available space inside the buildings was being used. Chris Silcock<\/a>, Kellogg\u2019s UK managing director, said when the closure was announced that the investment required to maintain the plant in the coming years was \u201csimply not viable\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Production and packing reached their final stage this week. According to Kellanova, \u201ca significant milestone was reached this week, as operations across production and packing came to an end<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company thanked employees as well as suppliers, partners and members of the local community who had been connected with the factory over the decades. It has also said it is working with local organisations to recognise the site\u2019s history, including through archive material and memorabilia displayed at the Trafford Local Studies Centre<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jobs affected as production shifts to north Wales<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Around 360 jobs have been lost following the end of manufacturing at Trafford Park. Production is being transferred to Kellanova\u2019s Wrexham operation in north Wales as the company consolidates its UK cereal manufacturing there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Retail union Usdaw <\/strong>had been involved in discussions over the closure. According to the BBC, union representative Mick Murray described the end of production as \u201ca sad time\u201d and said the organisation had worked to achieve the best possible outcome for its members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Usdaw secured an enhanced redundancy package <\/strong>as well as relocation payments for employees who chose to move to Wrexham. Murray also praised union representatives at Trafford Park for their work supporting staff during the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kellogg\u2019s will retain operations elsewhere in north-west England after the factory closes. The company continues to operate its UK headquarters at MediaCity <\/strong>in Salford and a distribution centre in St Helens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Trafford Park buildings will stay open until the end of the year even though cereal production has finished.
