The NHS in England<\/strong> will offer free high-street cholesterol checks for millions of adults in a new effort to identify people at risk of heart attacks and strokes<\/strong> before serious illness develops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The seven-minute finger-prick tests will be available at participating pharmacies from this autumn, allowing eligible adults to receive cholesterol results, blood pressure checks and medical advice without visiting a GP surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Pharmacy-Based Approach To Earlier Detection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The move was reported by The Guardian<\/strong><\/a>, which said the national rollout will initially involve around 100 NHS pharmacies<\/a><\/strong> across England. The programme targets people aged 40 to 84<\/strong> who are not pregnant and have not received a blood test within the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the check, a pharmacist uses a small lancet to collect a blood sample from the fingertip. The sample is analysed immediately, and a pharmacist prescriber can discuss the results, recommend lifestyle changes and decide whether further treatment, including statins<\/strong>, may be appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patients will receive their cholesterol results by email and will also be offered a blood pressure assessment during their consultation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative follows a pilot project in north London led by Barts Health NHS trust<\/strong> in partnership with UCLPartners<\/strong> and the cholesterol charity Heart UK<\/strong>. The trial involved 2,493 patients and found that nearly one in five participants had a high risk of experiencing a heart attack or stroke within the following decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those identified as higher risk received advice and referrals for treatment. At least 88 people began taking statins after the checks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From this autumn, more NHS pharmacies in England will begin offering life-saving cholesterol check-ups.

This pilot is part of a wider effort to reduce deaths from heart disease and stroke by a quarter over the next decade.

NHS Says Pharmacies Can Help Prevent Serious Disease<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

David Webb, the chief pharmaceutical officer for England, said pharmacies could be a vital first line of defence against serious illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBy making it easier for people to get a quick and convenient cholesterol health check on their local high street, we can spot ticking timebombs earlier, helping people take action, and prevent heart attacks and strokes before they happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is the latest in a series of initiatives involving pharmacies in delivering care previously only offered in GP surgeries as part of the 10-year health plan to bring care closer to where people live.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The programme is part of a wider NHS effort to move some healthcare services into community settings, allowing patients to access support closer to home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Sotiris Antoniou, the clinical lead for the scheme at Barts Health<\/strong>, said expanding the approach across England could help pharmacists identify cardiovascular risks earlier and respond with timely advice and treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Rani Khatib, NHS England\u2019s national specialty adviser for cardiovascular disease prevention, said people should understand the main factors linked to heart disease, including high cholesterol<\/strong> and high blood pressure<\/strong>, and \u201cknow their numbers\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis initiative will help people manage their risk factors earlier and reduce their risk of having heart attacks or strokes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
