The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)<\/strong> has launched a new review of Pension Credit<\/strong> claims that could lead to reduced payments for tens of thousands of pensioners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The campaign targets selected claimants as the government seeks to reduce benefit overpayments and save an estimated \u00a3370 million by April 2031<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DWP Contacts Pensioners Over Pension Credit Claims<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to The Independent<\/a><\/em>, the review could affect between 95,000 and 100,000 pensioners<\/strong>, with around 10,700 claimants<\/strong> expected to lose payments this year. Those affected could see an average reduction of about \u00a31,400<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The DWP<\/a> said that receiving a review letter does not mean a claimant has broken any rules. Some pensioners may be asked to provide additional information, including recent bank statements<\/strong>, to confirm their circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The checks form part of a wider effort to identify cases where people may have received more support than they were entitled to under existing rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A DWP spokesperson said: “We know that a claimant’s circumstances can change throughout their claim, which can lead to their claim being incorrect. By reviewing claims, we can ensure claimants are receiving the correct entitlement.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benefit Overpayments Drive New Checks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The review follows DWP figures showing that overpaid Pension Credit<\/strong> claims increased to 33 per cent in 2025\/26<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The department linked many overpayments to cases where claimants had not fully declared assets or had spent longer periods abroad than permitted under benefit rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pension Credit provides additional financial support to eligible older people and can also unlock access to other forms of assistance. The benefit is described by the DWP as a gateway to further help, with potential additional support worth up to \u00a39,665<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, estimates suggest around 761,000 pensioners<\/strong> who qualify for Pension Credit are still not claiming it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A statement from the DWP said: “The Government wants all pensioners to get the support they are rightly entitled to and thanks to our biggest ever Pension Credit take-up campaign, we have seen an additional 33,500 Pension Credit awards in 2025, worth on average \u00a387 a week, compared with the previous year.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move comes as the government continues efforts to manage welfare spending while ensuring benefits reach people who meet the requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
