Britain\u2019s spell of hot weather is facing a sharp change as thunderstorms, heavy rain and lightning threaten parts of the UK after warm air moving from Spain collides with cooler Atlantic conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forecasters say a developing \u201cSpanish plume\u201d<\/strong> could trigger widespread storms, with around 20 counties across England and Wales<\/strong> identified as areas at risk of significant rainfall. Some locations could see up to 90mm of rain<\/strong> during the unsettled period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The developing weather pattern is linked to the interaction between very warm air from southern Europe and cooler air spreading from the west. This contrast can create the instability needed for thunderstorms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Met Office<\/strong> explains: \u201cAs cooler air spreads from the west, instability increases and the very warm air rises through the cooler air, enhancing the formation of thunderstorms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe very warm air from Spain forms a layer at height and acts as a lid, initially preventing warm air rising from the surface. However, as the air at the surface increases in temperature eventually it warms enough to break through this barrier and air can then rise from the surface up to the higher parts of the troposphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis air is very unstable and the dramatic release of energy that occurs results in the formation of cumulonimbus clouds, lightning, thunder, hail, downpours of rain and sometimes gusty winds.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

20 Counties Face Heavy Rain And Thunderstorm Risk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to The Mirror<\/a>, forecast data suggests the heaviest rainfall could affect parts of eastern England, while other areas including North Wales<\/strong>, the north-west<\/strong>, the Midlands<\/strong> and parts of the south-east<\/strong> may also experience intense downpours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
