Some locations could see up to 90mm of rain during the unsettled period.

Met Office Explains How Heat Could Trigger Powerful Storms

The developing weather pattern is linked to the interaction between very warm air from southern Europe and cooler air spreading from the west. This contrast can create the instability needed for thunderstorms.

The Met Office explains: “As cooler air spreads from the west, instability increases and the very warm air rises through the cooler air, enhancing the formation of thunderstorms.

“The very warm air from Spain forms a layer at height and acts as a lid, initially preventing warm air rising from the surface. However, as the air at the surface increases in temperature eventually it warms enough to break through this barrier and air can then rise from the surface up to the higher parts of the troposphere.

“This air is very unstable and the dramatic release of energy that occurs results in the formation of cumulonimbus clouds, lightning, thunder, hail, downpours of rain and sometimes gusty winds.”

20 Counties Face Heavy Rain And Thunderstorm Risk

According to The Mirror, forecast data suggests the heaviest rainfall could affect parts of eastern England, while other areas including North Wales, the north-west, the Midlands and parts of the south-east may also experience intense downpours.

The counties identified as facing the highest rainfall risk include:

Yorkshire

Lincolnshire

Nottinghamshire

Derbyshire

Leicestershire

Cheshire

Shropshire

Staffordshire

Warwickshire

Northamptonshire

Cambridgeshire

Norfolk

Suffolk

Essex

Sussex

Oxfordshire

Bedfordshire

Flintshire

Denbighshire

Caernarfonshire

The affected areas are located across England and Wales, with eastern regions expected to receive some of the most persistent rainfall during the forecast period.

Forecasters say a developing “Spanish plume” could trigger widespread storms, with around 20 counties across England and Wales
Credit: WXCHARTS

Spanish Plume Could Bring Lightning, Hail And Downpours

A Spanish plume occurs when warm air moves north from Spain and rises as it meets cooler air, allowing large storm clouds to develop.

The system can produce rapidly changing conditions, including thunderstorms, lightning strikes, hail and sudden bursts of heavy rain.
