Although pump prices fell in June as wholesale costs declined, they remained significantly above levels recorded before the conflict in the Middle East, while retailer margins remained historically high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fuel Finder Now Covers 99% of UK Fuel Sales<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fuel Finder <\/strong>was introduced following a CMA recommendation in July 2023, after the regulator found that competition between fuel retailers had weakened since 2019. The scheme requires forecourts to report fuel prices and fuel availability within 30 minutes of a change, providing motorists with more current information when comparing nearby stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the CMA&#8217;s latest road fuel monitoring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/cma-publishes-latest-monitoring-update-on-road-fuel-market\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">update<\/a>, about 97% of UK <strong>petrol stations<\/strong> are registered, and those sites account for an estimated 99% of fuel sold across the country. The overwhelming majority of registered forecourts have recorded a price update within the past week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A station without a recent update is not necessarily failing to comply. Smaller and rural sites, for example, can change their prices less frequently because their prices themselves have not changed. The Government estimates that motorists using Fuel Finder-backed services could save between 1p and 6p per litre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Registration has also become an enforcement issue. Since the grace period ended in April, the CMA has sent <strong>1,166 letters<\/strong> to retailers and issued compliance notices concerning 53 sites. Most registration problems were resolved after retailers were contacted, and the regulator has not needed to impose financial penalties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>VE3, the technology company operating the public database and monitoring compliance, has not referred any suspected breaches of the price-reporting duty to the CMA. <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.linkedin.com\/in\/sarah-cardell-756b34228\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sarah Cardell<\/a>, the CMA&#8217;s chief executive, said greater use of Fuel Finder could save motorists money while helping to drive down prices over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">New \u201cFuel Finder\u201d scheme means drivers can now compare real-time petrol and diesel prices at every UK forecourt, helping you find the cheapest fuel nearby and boosting competition to drive prices down.\ud83d\udc47<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2PT3H67C7c\">https:\/\/t.co\/2PT3H67C7c<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Rebecca Long-Bailey (@RLong_Bailey) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RLong_Bailey\/status\/2044353991920746617?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 15, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Watchdog Remains Concerned About High Fuel Margins<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The high level of Fuel Finder registration has not removed wider concerns about competition. According to the CMA, lower wholesale prices resulted in falling<strong> pump prices<\/strong> during June, but some retailers did not immediately pass reductions in wholesale <a href=\"https:\/\/en.econostrum.info\/uk\/diesel-prices-drop-sharply\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"122476\">diesel <\/a>costs on to motorists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The regulator found no evidence that retailers actively altered their pricing strategies to take advantage of the conflict in the Middle East. It remains concerned, though, that &#8220;<strong>passive pricing strategies<\/strong>&#8221; used by the majority of retailers are contributing to persistently high margins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Guardian reported that retailer profit margins were either at, or above, the historically high levels seen in 2025. The CMA plans a more detailed review in the autumn, examining retailers&#8217; <strong>pricing strategies<\/strong>, the speed with which wholesale price movements reach the pumps and the reasons prices vary between local areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Motoring organisations have also questioned the <strong>pace of reductions<\/strong>. AA president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theaa.com\/about-us\/public-affairs\/aa-presidents-blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edmund King<\/a> said some retailers were passing on lower costs promptly, while &#8220;<em>many more, including large numbers of supermarkets, are not<\/em>&#8220;. The RAC highlighted regional differences as another concern. Its head of policy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rac.co.uk\/experts\/simon-williams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Simon Williams<\/a>, said <strong>petrol <\/strong>and <strong>diesel <\/strong>were being sold in Northern Ireland for an average of 8p per litre less than elsewhere in the UK, making a family-car fill-up about \u00a34.40 cheaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, the CMA says it expects reductions in wholesale prices to be passed on &#8220;rapidly and fully&#8221;.
