According to The Guardian, personal finance specialists advise students not to choose an account simply because its introductory perk looks attractive, particularly when an overdraft could provide value throughout several years of study.

Interest-Free Overdrafts Vary Considerably Between Banks

The largest advertised overdrafts are available from NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland. Their student accounts offer up to £500 from the first day, rising to up to £2,000 from the second term of the first year and up to £3,250 from year three onwards. Both accounts also provide £100 in cash and a four-year Tastecard subscription.

Nationwide’s FlexStudent account follows a stepped structure. Students can also receive £100 in cash and £120 of Just Eat vouchers, provided they meet the specified payment and spending requirements.

According to Save the Student, cited by The Guardian, maintenance loans fall short of living costs by an average of £502 a month. The website therefore places particular weight on overdraft limits when assessing student accounts and ranks NatWest/RBS, Nationwide FlexStudent and Santander Edge among its leading choices for 2026-27.

HSBC offers up to £1,000 from the first day, followed by up to £2,000 in year two and £3,000 in year three. Barclays provides up to £500 initially, rising to £1,000 during year one and £1,500 from year two. TSB starts at up to £500 for the first six months, then increases the limit in stages to £1,500 from month 10.

How student bank overdrafts compare across the UK’s biggest banks © Shutterstock

Cash, Travel Discounts and Food Vouchers Remain Part of the Choice

Santander’s Edge student account offers a four-year 16-25 Railcard, giving a third off most rail fares in Great Britain and discounts on London Underground journeys when linked to an Oyster card.
