At the same time, the weather has changed how households spend, lifting sales in several categories associated with keeping cool or making use of the sunshine.

According to analysis by the green thinktank Verdant, reported by The Guardian, heatwaves may have cost the UK £4.4bn in lost economic output by the end of July. The estimate comes as retailers, pubs and hospitality businesses report sharply different effects, with some benefiting from stronger demand while others face higher operating costs or reduced footfall.

Heat Is Weighing on Productivity and Agriculture

Verdant estimates that June’s unusually hot weather caused £2.36bn in economic losses, with the figure reaching £4.4bn after July’s high temperatures were included. Its calculations are based on European estimates from insurer Allianz suggesting that, for every degree above 30C, hourly worker output falls by 3%.

The impact is linked to employees working more slowly, cutting their hours or being unable to work during periods of extreme heat. Research from the Grantham Research Institute at the London School of Economics also estimated losses of more than £1bn during June alone.

According to The Guardian, a survey of 2,000 people found that 3.6% of respondents did not work at all during the week of 22 June because of the heat, while 87% reported at least one health effect, including disrupted sleep or dizziness.

Average reported reduction in working hours during the June 2026 heatwave (1,459 nationallyrepresentative respondents) ©London School of Economics

Agriculture has faced a different form of pressure. The Mirror reported that dry conditions have left grass growth severely restricted and harvests are expected to reach a record low. Some dairy and livestock farmers have already begun using winter silage to feed animals, increasing the need for additional feed where stocks are available.

Shoppers Shift Spending Towards Cooling and Summer Products

The same conditions have driven strong demand for products intended to make hot weather more manageable. The Mirror reported that Chinese online retailer Joybuy saw electric fan sales rise 2,500% during June’s heatwave, while John Lewis said sales of neck fans more than tripled.

Demand has extended to portable air-conditioning units, with John Lewis reporting that some batches sold within minutes of becoming available. Blackout blind sales more than doubled, while paddling pool sales rose by more than a third compared with the same period a year earlier.

Fashion retailers have also benefited from shoppers buying more shorts, T-shirts and other lightweight clothing. Next said sales increased by 9.2% in the 13 weeks to the start of August, compared with its forecast of 4%, adding £70m in sales. The company attributed part of that performance to the hot weather in June and July.

According to the British Retail Consortium’s Helen Dickinson, clothing was a strong area because of demand for affordable summer essentials. Ice cream sales moved in the same direction: Waitrose said ice lolly sales rose 82% year on year last week, while Ben & Jerry’s sales increased 9.2% in the three months to June.

Pubs and domestic tourism have seen benefits too, although not without pressure. Some venues have reported stronger summer trading, while travellers seeking lower temperatures have shown greater interest in northern England, Scotland and Scandinavia.
