According to the Manchester Evening News, places covered by the north-west warning include Knutsford, Congleton and Cheadle.

Officials are urging people to take straightforward precautions during the hottest part of the day. The advice includes drinking plenty of water, checking on vulnerable relatives, friends and neighbours, and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun when temperatures are at their highest.

The warnings also draw attention to people who may be more affected by the heat, particularly older adults, those with underlying health conditions and people who live alone. The UKHSA has warned that extreme heat can lead to a rise in deaths, especially among people aged 65 and over or those already living with health problems.

Temperatures Rise as Officials Warn of Health Impacts

The Met Office said the most intense heat would be relatively short-lived compared with some recent heatwaves, but temperatures are still expected to reach levels capable of causing disruption. According to Met Office chief forecaster Chris Bulmer, temperatures are expected to rise “widely into the mid-30s Celsius on Thursday”, creating the potential for impacts in some areas. He said this was the reason an official Met Office warning had been issued.

Health services are also part of the concern surrounding the latest spell of hot weather. The UKHSA’s amber alerts indicate that high temperatures are likely to have a significant effect on health and care services. Officials have advised people to remain hydrated and to pay particular attention to anyone who may find it difficult to keep cool. Those worried about their own health, or the health of someone else, have been advised to contact NHS 111.

Follow @UKHSA advice to stay safe in the heat:

👉Drink lots of water
👉Apply sun cream generously!
👉Find shade where you can
👉Look out for vulnerable friends and neighbours

More tips for keeping cool: https://t.co/2l1osxn6cJ#WeatherReady pic.twitter.com/gcsgjX9o9W
— Met Office (@metoffice) August 13, 2026

Travel and Water Safety Advice during the Heat

The Met Office has also issued specific guidance for people using public transport. Passengers are advised to carry water, wear light fabrics in light colours and, where possible, take a small battery-powered hand-held fan. According to the guidance, anyone who begins to feel unwell while travelling should get off at the next stop for fresh air. Passengers are also being encouraged to watch for signs that other people may be struggling in the heat.

Water safety has formed another part of the official advice, following a number of water-related deaths during heatwave periods this year. People entering the water are being told to do so gradually rather than jumping or diving straight in, in order to reduce the risk of cold water shock.

Officials are also recommending lifeguarded beaches or supervised swimming areas. If somebody gets into difficulty in the water, the advice is to float on their back, while those around them should also follow recognised safety guidance rather than entering danger themselves.

Parts of north-west England are under an amber heat warning as temperatures climb into the mid-30s Celsius, with some areas expected to reach 38C.
