The revised policy applies to new and existing eligibility rules for the 16-17 Saver, which costs \u00a335 for one year and provides a 50% discount<\/strong> on most rail fares. According to the DfT, more than 70,000 students each year previously missed out on an average of \u00a3175 in potential savings because their railcard expired when they turned 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The change brings the 16-17 Saver in line with other railcards, which remain valid for a full year <\/strong>from the purchase date rather than ending when a customer reaches a certain age during that period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Department for Transport said the previous arrangement created a gap for students who reached their 18th birthday during an academic year. Under the updated rules, those passengers will continue to receive the 50% rail fare discount until the end of their railcard\u2019s normal validity period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rail minister Lord Peter Hendy<\/a> described the change as a \u201ccommon-sense change\u201d for passengers. According to his statement, the update will support young people and their families by reducing travel <\/a>costs while they continue with further education, vocational routes or early employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Union of Students also welcomed the move. Kaynat Ahmad<\/a>, vice president for further education at the organisation, said the railcard helps young people who depend on trains to reach college, work or training. Rail Industry Says Changes Support Simpler Fares<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The extension forms part of wider plans to make rail travel easier to use and improve fare structures ahead of the launch of Great British Railways<\/strong>, according to the government. The DfT said other measures include an expanded pay-as-you-go network and improved digital ticketing. The railcard adjustment is focused specifically on young passengers who previously lost access to the discount during the year they turned 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jacqueline Starr<\/a>, executive chair and chief executive of the Rail Delivery Group, said the extension showed the industry\u2019s commitment to providing better value fares and a more joined-up railway. According to Starr, allowing customers to receive a full year of savings from the purchase date means young people can continue benefiting from discounted travel during their education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
