Triple Lock Retained despite Growing Calls for Reform<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The government has confirmed that the state pension triple lock will remain in place despite increasing debate over its long-term affordability. According to BirminghamLive<\/strong>, Andy Burnham has committed to keeping the policy throughout the current Parliament after facing calls for it to be scrapped. The exact increase for the 2026\/27 financial year will not be known until later this year, when the relevant inflation and earnings figures have been assessed under the triple lock formula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the same source, research suggests that if last year’s wage growth figures were repeated, the full new state pension could increase by more than \u00a3600. The full new state pension currently stands at \u00a312,548 a year, while the basic state pension is \u00a39,615.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD<\/a>) is among the latest organisations to question whether the policy can remain financially sustainable. Mark Pemberthy<\/a>, benefits consulting leader at Gallagher, said there were indications that social care funding <\/strong>could undergo a review, adding that this may act as a catalyst for reconsidering the triple lock despite Labour’s repeated commitment to retaining it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angeline Ong<\/a>, senior investments analyst at IG, said the OECD had joined a growing number of voices questioning the long-term sustainability of the policy, while noting that political considerations remain the main barrier to reform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some Pensioners to Receive Two State Pension Payments in August<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Separate reporting by the Express highlights that some recipients of the new state pension will receive two regular four-weekly payments during August because the month contains five Mondays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Express, people whose National Insurance numbers end between 00 and 19 are normally paid on Mondays. As a result, eligible recipients in that payment group will receive two payments during August 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those receiving the full new state pension<\/a> are paid \u00a3241.30 a week following the 4.8% increase introduced in April. Since payments are made every four weeks, each payment amounts to up to \u00a3965.20. Receiving two scheduled payments during August means eligible pensioners could receive up to \u00a31,930.40 over the course of the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Express also reports that people with incomplete National Insurance records<\/strong> will receive lower amounts, with entitlement calculated individually by the Department for Work and Pensions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The publication further states that former Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced that pensioners whose only income is the state pension and who exceed the \u00a312,570 Personal Tax Allowance will not pay tax on their state pension in future, with Chancellor John Healey confirming that this policy will continue.
