The bank says the change is intended to make investing simpler and more accessible for everyday customers while leaving several transaction-related charges unchanged.

The decision affects customers using Barclays Direct Investing and removes what the bank previously described as its customer or platform fee. According to Barclays, the revised pricing is designed to simplify charges that some investors may have found difficult to understand or compare with other providers.

For many customers, the change reduces the overall cost of maintaining investments, although dealing fees and other applicable charges continue to apply. According to Barclays, the move reflects research showing that fees are the most important consideration for many people when choosing an investment service.

Customer Fee Removed While Dealing Charges Remain

From 31 May, Barclays Direct Investing customers no longer pay a monthly customer fee to hold investments on the platform. Customers continue to pay a £6 dealing charge when buying or selling shares, exchange-traded funds, bonds, gilts and investment trusts online. Telephone trades remain subject to a £25 dealing fee. The bank says removing the customer fee is intended to make pricing clearer rather than shifting charges elsewhere.

Its research found that low fees and charges were the single most important factor when selecting an investment service for 39 per cent of UK adults. The bank said this underlined the influence that costs can have on whether people decide to begin investing.

Barclays also provided an example of how the revised pricing affects customers. According to the bank, someone holding £10,000 in shares and making six trades over the course of a year would now pay £36 in dealing charges, compared with £61 under the previous pricing structure, representing a saving of £25 following the removal of the customer fee.

Some additional costs still apply in specific circumstances. Customers trading overseas shares may incur foreign exchange charges when converting currencies. Barclays also said that cash held in Direct Investing accounts earns interest, although the bank retains a portion of that interest, describing this as common practice across the investment industry.

The changes apply as Barclays continues to compete with other high street banking groups and investment providers, while presenting a simpler charging structure for customers using its Direct Investing service.

Barclays has introduced a significant pricing change for its Direct Investing service by removing its long-standing customer fee for holding investments.
