More than 200,000 households in England and Wales will be able to apply for a new £9,000 heat pump grant from July 21, as the government increases support for homes replacing oil and LPG heating systems.

Grant Increased to Help Rural Homes Switch Heating Systems

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for eligible households is rising by 20%, from £7,500 to £9,000. The higher payment is aimed at properties that currently rely on heating oil or liquid petroleum gas (LPG) and want to install an air source or ground source heat pump.

The scheme is particularly focused on homes that are not connected to the gas network, including many rural properties. Heat pumps work by taking heat from the air or ground, increasing its temperature and transferring it into homes for heating and hot water.

Who Can Qualify for the £9,000 Grant?

To be eligible, households must meet several conditions. Applicants must own the property, although rented properties can also qualify if the owner applies. The home must be off the gas grid and have an existing heating system that uses oil or LPG.

The property must also have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). The grant is not available for households replacing other types of heating systems under this specific increase.

Residents Cannot Apply Directly

Homeowners cannot submit the grant application themselves. Instead, a registered installer approved by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) must apply for the funding on their behalf.

The process involves receiving a quote from an approved installer, who then applies to energy regulator Ofgem. Ofgem will contact the homeowner to confirm that the installer is carrying out the work. Once the heat pump has been installed, the grant amount will be deducted from the final installation cost.

Residents can find approved installers through the MCS website or by contacting an energy supplier.

Households Warned About Heat Pump Grant Scams

Eligible homeowners are being advised to use verified installers and avoid companies making unrealistic promises about the scheme. Using an MCS-certified installer is required for the grant application and helps ensure the work meets the scheme’s standards.

The programme is designed to help households reduce their dependence on fossil fuel heating and gain more certainty over future energy costs. Unlike traditional oil or gas boilers, heat pumps use electricity to transfer existing heat from the environment into homes, providing heating and hot water without burning fossil fuels directly.
