According to Royal Mail, the delays are being managed through temporary delivery rotations while additional support is provided to local offices.

Local staffing issues affect hundreds of postcode areas

Royal Mail has published a list of 216 postcode areas where deliveries are currently delayed because of local operational difficulties. According to Royal Mail, these issues include high levels of staff sickness, resourcing pressures and other local factors that have temporarily reduced the ability of some delivery offices to complete their normal rounds.

The company said it aims to deliver mail to every address six days a week wherever possible. Where this cannot be achieved, deliveries are rotated to reduce delays for individual customers while targeted operational support is deployed to affected offices.

The disruption spans a wide geographical area. Delivery offices serving locations such as Abingdon, Bedford, Cambridge, Chichester, Dudley, Fareham, Gloucester, Hull, Lichfield, Nottingham, Oxford, Rugby, Stockport, Swindon, Tiverton, Warrington, Wolverhampton and Yate are among those listed in the latest service update. Areas in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are also affected, including Barry, Brecon, Carmarthen, Corwen, Inverclyde, the Isle of Iona and Newry.

Royal Mail apologised for the inconvenience caused and thanked customers for their understanding while local service levels are restored.

If you have experienced an issue receiving second class post please get in touch with me and my team at steve.darling.mp@parliament.uk.

I have already written to Royal Mail and the Minister and will be pushing to fix this issue. #mail #post #royalmail #Torbay #Torquay… pic.twitter.com/YBgAz9nv8R
— Steve Darling MP (@SteveDarlingMP) July 13, 2026

Royal Mail outlines improvement plans after regulatory criticism

The latest service update follows continued scrutiny of Royal Mail’s delivery performance. According to reports, Ofcom fined the company £21 million in October after it failed to meet delivery targets.

During the 2024–2025 period, Royal Mail delivered 77% of First Class mail on time and achieved a 92.5% on-time rate for Second Class post. This year, the company has committed to improving its performance against Ofcom’s target requiring 90% of First Class next-day deliveries to arrive on time within a year.

According to Royal Mail, chief operating officer Jamie Stephenson said the company is making significant investment to improve reliability across its delivery network. He said implementing lasting changes across a network of this scale would take time and described reform of the Universal Service as an important part of adapting the postal network to reflect current patterns of mail use while maintaining the nationwide one-price service.

Stephenson also said Royal Mail plans to introduce its new delivery model across all delivery offices before the Christmas peak period. He added that quarterly performance targets have been established as the changes are rolled out, and that early performance during the current year is progressing in line with those plans.

Thousands of households and businesses across the UK are expected to receive post later than usual after Royal Mail confirmed delivery delays affecting 216 postcode areas.
