As periods of extreme heat become more frequent across the UK, EDF has introduced a new support package aimed at helping vulnerable customers stay safe during hot weather. The initiative includes practical cooling equipment and financial assistance for households concerned about the cost of using cooling appliances.

The energy supplier said the new Heatwave Relief Packs are designed to assist up to 10,000 eligible customers. According to EDF, the program is valued at £1 million and responds to growing concerns that some households are avoiding the use of fans and other cooling devices because of energy costs.

Eligible customers will receive tailored support worth up to £100, depending on their individual needs. According to EDF, the Heatwave Relief Packs may include energy-efficient desk or pedestal fans, handheld or neck fans, thermal blackout curtains, reflective window film, reusable hydration bottles, cooling towels, and practical guidance on staying safe during periods of extreme heat.

The support may also include up to £20 in electricity credit or vouchers to help cover the cost of running cooling appliances. EDF said customers will be identified through its customer support teams, referrals from trusted partners and community organizations, and direct customer engagement channels.

Joe Souto, Director of Retail at EDF, said the company believes vulnerable households should receive additional support during periods of dangerous heat in much the same way they do during severe winter weather.

We’re increasingly seeing a summer version of the ‘heating or eating’ dilemma,” Souto said. “Some vulnerable customers are reluctant to use fans or other cooling appliances because they’re worried about the cost. Nobody should have to choose between protecting their health and managing their household budget.” According to reports, the initiative comes as high temperatures continue across England, with heat health alerts issued during the current spell of hot weather.

Health Concerns Drive the Launch of the Heatwave Relief Packs

The support package has been introduced against the backdrop of growing public health concerns linked to extreme temperatures. According to the UK Health Security Agency, there were 1,311 heat-associated deaths in England during the summer of 2024, with the highest mortality rates recorded among people aged 75 and over.

The agency also reported that more than 10,000 heat-associated deaths have been recorded across UK heat episodes since 2020. According to the UK Health Security Agency, hot weather can worsen existing medical conditions and increase the risk of serious illnesses, including heart attacks, strokes, and respiratory problems.

EDF is working with SHINE London, an energy advice service that supports vulnerable households across the capital, to help identify people who could benefit from the scheme and to provide advice on reducing the risk of homes overheating.

Jessica Taplin, Chief Executive of Charis, which is helping distribute the support packages, said extreme heat represents a genuine health emergency for many people, particularly older adults, young children, disabled people, and those living with long-term health conditions.

Cheryl Brown, Energy Advice Manager at SHINE London, said that relatively simple measures can help reduce the impact of heat. These include keeping curtains and blinds closed on sun-facing windows during the day, opening windows when outside temperatures are lower, staying hydrated, using fans effectively, and checking on older relatives, friends, and neighbors during periods of extreme heat.
