The trial began on 3 July and is scheduled to continue until 25 September. According to Greater Anglia, the additional services will also help assess demand for overnight airport rail travel before any decision is made on introducing similar services over the longer term.

The introduction of overnight trains addresses a long-standing gap in public transport options between Stansted Airport and central London during the early hours. Most services will operate between Stansted Airport and Tottenham Hale, where passengers can connect with the Victoria line Night Tube.

Some early morning trains will also continue to or start from London Liverpool Street, providing an additional route into central London. Standard Stansted Express fares will apply throughout the trial, including Railcard discounts where applicable.

According to Greater Anglia, the overnight timetable will operate every Friday night into Saturday morning, with trains running approximately every 30 minutes between around 11.50pm and 5am. The journey between Stansted Airport and Tottenham Hale takes about 36 minutes.

The operator said the trial has been made possible through joint planning with Network Rail Anglia, allowing the additional services to run while preserving essential engineering and maintenance work across the railway.

Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy said the overnight trains would improve journeys for passengers travelling on late arrivals or early departures by providing a direct rail connection into London through the Night Tube network. He also referred to the wider programme of rail reform, noting that Greater Anglia was brought into public ownership last autumn ahead of the planned establishment of Great British Railways in 2027.

The trial also follows the introduction of contactless pay-as-you-go ticketing at Stansted Airport earlier this year, making rail travel between the airport and London available through contactless payment.

According to Greater Anglia, one of the principal aims of the trial is to understand customer demand for overnight airport rail services. The operator said passenger numbers will be monitored before any decision is taken on whether similar services could become permanent.

Friday Night Services Will Run Every 30 Minutes Until Early Morning
