Many of the schemes are linked to Pension Credit, which not only provides direct financial support but also gives access to additional assistance with housing, healthcare and household costs. According to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Pension Credit is currently worth an average of \u00a34,300 a year following the 4.8% uprating introduced in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Household finances continue to face pressure after increases to several essential bills earlier this year. Rises to Council Tax, water, broadband and mobile charges have already affected budgets, while higher energy prices from 1 July are expected to increase annual household costs further. Against that backdrop, organisations and consumer experts continue to encourage eligible pensioners to check whether they can claim support that often goes unclaimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pension Credit Acts as a Gateway to Wider Financial Support<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pension Credit <\/strong>is available to people who have reached State Pension age and meet the qualifying income criteria. According to the DWP, it tops up weekly income to \u00a3238 for single claimants or \u00a3363.25 for couples, with the average annual award estimated at \u00a34,300.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The benefit also unlocks access to several other forms of assistance. Eligible claimants receiving the Guarantee Credit <\/a><\/strong>element may qualify for Housing Benefit, which, according to MoneySavingExpert, could be worth around \u00a31,000 a year and may cover rent in full depending on individual circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other linked support includes Council Tax Reduction, with discounts varying by local authority. Reductions <\/strong>can range from approximately \u00a3300 to around \u00a31,600 where a full discount applies. Pension Credit recipients aged 75 or over may also receive a free TV licence, removing the annual \u00a3180 charge introduced from April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sarah Pennells<\/a>, consumer finance specialist at Royal London, said Pension Credit is particularly valuable because it functions as a “gateway” benefit, allowing eligible pensioners to receive additional help with housing costs, NHS charges and television licensing. She also noted that many people entitled to Pension Credit have not checked whether they qualify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Healthcare Support and Attendance Allowance Add Further Assistance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Healthcare-related support also forms part of the assistance available. People receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit are entitled to free NHS dental treatment<\/strong> and help with eye care, including vouchers <\/a>towards glasses or contact lenses. MoneySavingExpert estimates that eye care support could be worth up to \u00a3215, while NHS dental treatment may amount to as much as \u00a31,000 depending on the care required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In England, Guarantee Credit recipients are also entitled to free NHS prescriptions. Prescription charges remain \u00a39.90<\/strong> per item for the 2026\/27 financial year, although prescriptions are already free for everyone in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Pension Credit claimants moving home may also receive a concessionary rate on Royal Mail’s redirection service, this reduces the standard cost by around \u00a325.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Separate from Pension Credit, Attendance Allowance<\/strong> is available to State Pension-age people with a disability or health condition requiring regular care or supervision. Following the April uprating, the lower rate stands at \u00a376.90 per week, while the higher rate is \u00a3114.60 per week.
